Troubleshooting Tips

T. The mapping application doesn't start or won't open.
A. It's likely you have a pop-up blocker installed in your web browser and it's turned on. Please, turn it off to use the map. Be aware, that besides your web browser's pop-up blocker some add-on tool bars like Google and Yahoo also have their own pop-up blocker. You'll need to insure that all pop-up blockers are turned off to use CLEAR Map. Reload the page after you've turned off the pop-up blockers and try to use the map.

Note: Most modern pop-blockers whether native to the web browser or part of an add-on toolbar like Google or Yahoo allow you to add this website (http://gis.chicagopolice.org) to a list of websites that are allowed to use pop-ups. We recommend taking advantage of this capability to keep your pop-up blocker on while enabling CLEARMAP to function properly.

T. I'm sure I've turned off my pop-up blocker. The Go! button still doesn't do anything.
A. It's likely you have turned your browsers ability to use JavaScript OFF. JavaScript is a commonly used coding language in web development. Most browsers have JavaScript enabled by default, but it can be turned off by the user. You will need to enable the use of JavaScript to allow CLEAR Map to work correctly.

For Internet Explorer check under Tools | Internet Options, Security Tab, click Custom Level, scroll down to the Scripting section and make sure Active Scripting is Enabled. Reload web page.

For Firefox check under Tools | Options click the Content tab and make sure the Enable JavaScript checkbox is checked. Reload web page.

For Netscape check under Tools | Options, click Site Controls and make sure the Enable JavaScript / VBScript checkbox is checked. Reload web page.

T. Why is the map image so small that it's unreadable?
A. It's likely your computer's screen resolution is set too low for the map. CLEAR Map requires you use a screen resolution of at least 1024 x 768 to view the map as it was intended. Using a higher resolution than 1024 x 768 is recommended if possible. To change your screen resolution consult your computers Help section.

For Windows OS PCs open the Control Panel and double-click Display. In the Display Properties window under the Settings Tab you can change the screen resolution.

T. I changed my screen resolution to 1024 x 768 but the map is still small.
A. Web browsers with the tabbed browsing feature may try to open the CLEAR Map in a new Tab instead of opening in a new browser Window. CLEAR Map needs to open in a new Window to take advantage of the maximum screen space. Consult your browser's Help section on tabbed browsing to learn how to open a pop-up in a new Window instead of a Tab.

T. How to get rid of the URL bar in IE 7?
A. If you want to be rid of the URL bar that appears in Internet Explorer 7 at the top of the CLEAR Map you’ll need to make gis.chicagopolice.org a Trusted Site. In your Internet Options under the Security tab click the Trusted sites check, then click the Sites button and add the URL. Make sure to uncheck the “Require sever verification”  checkbox located at the bottom of the window.

Doing this is NOT REQUIRED to use the site.

T. CLEAR Map doesn't seem to be working correctly?
A. Insure that you are using a supported web browser. The supported browsers are Firefox 1.5, 2.0 & 3.0, Internet Explorer 6 & 7 and Netscape 8.1. If you are not using one of these browsers CLEAR Map may not function correctly. Also, check to insure you browser's pop-up blockers are turned off and that JavaScript use is enabled.
